I’ve been a painter for about 37 years now, and of course I studied Art History along the way. So I know about Jasper Johns’ famous American flag paintings. Several other artists have also made paintings based on the American flag. You can find every type of painting style imaginable. Some are not pretty. The poor old flag.Nevertheless, I have always wanted to try my hand at this genre. Some genres have strict guide-lines, but flag paintings seem to have no guard rails at all. So many different versions of Johns’ flag image have been done that I could never figure out how I could do something new and original. One day I got an idea. What if I pretended that someone made a flag out of old pieces of jeans material? After all, what could be more American than Levis jeans? My make-believe seamstress could have used bleach to make the legs of old pairs of jeans into the white stripes. All of the blue dye could not be bleached out of course, so I would have to simulate that feature. Then some of the now-white denim could have been dyed the brilliant red of our flag’s red stripes. Finally, the jeans flag maker could use white embroidery floss to make raised stars on a blue denim background. To simulate the threads and stitches in the jeans, I decided to use my watercolor pencils instead of my customary paint brushes. Unlike paint brushes, pencils can be sharpened to a fine point and used to make very fine lines. But what a daunting task to make a large picture of this jeans flag using watercolor pencils! That’s a lot of white paper to cover with colored pencils. If you think the scariest thing in the world for a writer is a blank piece of 8 1/2 X 11 typing paper, try facing a blank “full sheet” piece of watercolor paper that’s 22 X 30 inches!I decided to attempt to paint a picture of only a portion of my imaginary seamstress’ marvelously original jeans flag, which painting I have called “Made in America.” This is a fine quality giclée print on archival paper with non-fading colors.
