Description: This Papua New Guinea tribal 'Spirit mask' was initially hung outside the door of a village hut to keep evil spirits away. I purchased it in the mid-70's in Papeete, Tahiti--French Polynesia--from one of the foremost collectors of Papua New Guinea tribal art and art objects. This is a shell based mask with mud covering and woven fiber edge. The mud is embedded with cowry and other shells and hand painted. The colors are still vibrant and the woven fibers strong. Cassowary bird feathers protrude from the top as 'hair' for the spirit. There are 2 cowry shells missing (and were so when I purchased it). I had a special plexiglass display made for it and it has been contained in that since the case was made---mid 70's.The mask measures 8" across and 10" from top to bottom of the fibers. This, along with other Pacific Island art objects and memorabilia, were part of my Maui home for 25 years. I no longer live there, so thought it best to 'send this forward' to someone else who would appreciate this unique ancient island art.
