The Medieval Gothic palace was a royal residence until it was abandoned by the French monarchy at the end of the 14th century. It was later a judicial center and a prison during the French Revolution. Its most famous prisoner was Marie Antoinette, who was held there before her execution in 1793. Marcel Harang (b. Paris, 1910) was a painter and printmaker from a family of artists. He worked for engravers and painted in the streets of Paris while studying at the Academy Julian. He enlisted in the French army at the outbreak of World War II, but he was soon captured and spent five years in a German concentration camp. He returned home from the war emotionally and physically diminished but continued working as an artist.
