Description: Personal Encounters with Cancer by Margaret Barnhart This book will benefit any cancer patient even though they are living with a different diagnosis and treatment. Others will find the book helpful whether they are family, friends, health care workers, pastors or social workers. "Personal Encounters" is the story of six people with different cancer diagnoses. I was led to author this book because of my long time friend, Miriam. By email she told her many acquaintances that her tongue contained cancer cells. This is a compelling story of treatment and courage as she faced each day. Her two adult children, living far away, took time to be with her at critical points, and also managed the needs of their father who was living with Alzheimers Disease. A cancer diagnosis and treatment is not the end of the road for most patients. Yes, people die of cancer; however, having cancer does not mean you will die of cancer. Many survivors and thrivers know this is true. Another boy was born five years later. She worked in different locations as an elementary teacher and counselor. Margaret graduated from Bexley High School, Capital University in 1962 (elementary education), Miami University in 1970 (guidance and counseling), and Wright State University in 1988, with a major in Art Therapy--all in Ohio. Following 17 years of working in the schools, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Treatment consisted of mastectomy and chemotherapy, leaving her body too weak to work full time. She was granted disability retirement in 1989. During the period of chemotherapy she authored, "Journey Unknown, Focusing on the "Emotional Aspects of Cancer, Mastectomy and Chemotherapy." Some speaking engagements allowed her to tell the story. Margaret and her first husband, Walter Schrof, divorced and later she married Charles Barnhart, a man blind since the age of 10. In both of her marriages travel presented opportunities of learning different cultures. She and Charles moved to Arizona in 1998 where the climate and blue skies worked to eliminate years of depression. Mrs. Barnhart has served as treasurer of Tucson Society of the Blind for five years, is a member of Tucson Rincon Lions Club, and is a commissioned Stephen Minister with Christ Community Church.
