Description: Phila Club Cook Book. Author: Phila Club. Title: Phila Club Cook Book. Description: Ohio: The Club. 1926. Softcover. 8vo (9" x 6"), stiff brown wrappers. 112 pp., b&w illus. in ads. A scarce selection of recipes gathered "from those which were considered 'par excellence' by their authors...inasmuch as the size of the book is limited, impartial credit has been given," with the majority of recipes being credited to women in Ohio. These recipes are sometimes eccentric, such as a "Fluffy Salad," which was made with "1/2 pint mayonnaise, 1/2 pint whipping cream, 1 large cup pineapple, 1/4 pound marshmallows, 1 large cup cabbage, whip cream. Fold into mayonnaise. Add marshmallows (cut up) and let stand 1 hour in a cool place. Add cabbage and pineapple and serve. Will serve 10 people." Other selections are typical of the era, including "piemento sandwiches" and "corn salad." Among the many desserts is one recipe for "Heavenly Rice," credited to Mrs. Ed. Selzer. The photo-illustration on the front cover is a view of "Akron lumber magnate" Andrew Jackson's residence. Built in 1868, Jackson's home "was then sold to John Johnson for his residence in 1910. In 1918, it was sold to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a service fraternity that sought to use it as their temple. The house was used by Odd Fellows for 70 years until it was sold to an individual in 1988" ("Andrew Jackson House"). OCLC reports only two copies, one at Harvard, the other at Akron University.
