The Broad Buckler-fern is a common, bi-pinnate, fern that can grow to a height of a metre or more; it has broad, dark-green fronds that have an �arching� habit. The base of the stem (or stipe) is coated in golden scales with a dark brown stripe along the centre, although sometimes the scales are completely dark brown; when the fronds reach maturity the spore cases, or sori, on the back of the fronds will produce black, sooty looking, spores. Behind the fern is a very old log-pile, heaps of wood left to rot like this are a very important resource for wildlife, they become homes for invertebrates and the small mammals that feed on them.
