Description: This is the September 1961 issue of PHOTOPLAY, featuring Elizabeth Taylor on the cover. For several years in the 1960s, it seemed like Liz Taylor was on the cover of nearly every magazine… There are numerous articles/features (“What Jack Kennedy is hiding from Jackie,” Natalie Wood/Robert Wagner, Connie Stevens/Dorothy Provine, Ricky Nelson, Sandra Dee/Bobby Darrin, Elvis, Tuesday Weld, Sandra Dee, Marilyn Monroe/Frank Sinatra, Connie Francis, Michael Callan, Richard Long, Jeff Chandler, Troy Donahue, Diane McBain, etc.) as well as color and black & white photos and vintage advertisements for then-current movies and products. The magazine contains 92 pages and measures approximately 8.5 x 11 inches. Photoplay was one of the first American film (another name for photoplay) fan magazines. It was founded in 1911 in Chicago, the same year that J. Stuart Blackton founded Motion Picture Story, a magazine also directed at fans. For most of its run, Photoplay was published by Macfadden Publications. In 1921 Photoplay established what is considered the first significant annual movie award. The magazine ceased publication in 1980.
