Plants of Hawaii - How to Grow Them

Description: Hawaii is a perfect place for gardeners – islands where almost any plant will thrive year round. Plants of Hawaii – How to Grow Them explores this verdant environment, examining both ornamental and food plants common to gardens in Hawaii. This easy-to-read book contains a description of each plant and its origins, as well as information about propagation, culture, and pest control. The latest edition of this gardening classic includes a new chapter on Integrated Pest Management, earth-friendly recipes for pest control and a list of gardening resources. New chapters on Hibiscus and Heliconia have been added. Photos by award-winning photographer Jack Jeffrey will enhance the reader’s experience. Whether planting ornamentals for artistic expression or enjoying home-grown food for nutrition, sustainability, and economics, let Plants of Hawaii – How to Grow Them be your guide. Many old-time gardeners are familiar with Fortunato Teho’s writing. For over a quarter century he was considered one of the most influential gardening experts in Hawaii. The late Mr. Teho’s gardening column, radio and TV broadcasts were avidly followed by plant lovers throughout the state from the late 1940’s until his passing in 1986. Today, Fortunato Teho’s diligent work continues to be recognized as an important resource. The detailed information contained in Plants of Hawaii – How to Grow Them remains relevant and timeless. As befits a classic, the original text has been reproduced with only minor updates to include new information on disease and pest control, and new insights on plant culture and current horticultural practices. FORTUNATO TEHO was for over a quarter-century Hawaii’s gardening expert. Through his newspaper columns, radio and television broadcasts, personal appearances and best-selling book Plants of Hawaii – How to Grow Them, Teho’s influence on home gardening throughout the islands was unparalleled from the late 1940’s until his death in 1986. Teho was also the first naturalized Filipino-American citizen in Hawaii; the first Filipino graduate of the University of Hawaii; a graduate of Mid-Pacific Institute and their Man of the Year; a winner of many awards for public service and garden writing, including the prestigious Garden Communicator’s Award. Teho was loved and revered by his family and the public at large for his warmth, good humor and accessibility. Upon his death, it was said, he was "a memorable man" and "few have done as much to keep Hawaii beautiful and productive." From Fortunato Teho’s Hawaii Gardens by Corinne Villa-Riese and Ted Riese. Royalties from the sales of Plants of Hawaii will be used to support the Susannah and Fortunato Teho Scholarship Fund at the University of Hawaii.
