Description: Plain Jane 1 POST TRADER (SUTLER) LETTERHEAD - FORT UNION NEW MEXICO - 1884 DESCRIPTION Imprinted letterhead for W. Fabian & Co., Post Traders, Fort Union, July 19, 1884 Feb 1883. 9" x 8 ". Pen manuscript letter to Browne & Manzanares, Las Vegas. Letter regarding shipping of goods (flour and plug tobacco). Merchants attached to military posts were officially known as post sutlers until 1867 and as post traders until the system was abolished at the end of the 1880s. The position of post trader at Fort Union was abolished in 1889, but the last trader may have operated there into 1890. In October 1890, just a few months before Fort Union was abandoned, a post canteen (operated by the army to replace the old trader system and forerunner of what became the post exchange) was established at the post and functioned until the post was closed in 1891. A. W. Conger ended his term as trader on January 17, 1884. The same day, Werner Fabian, one of Conger's clerks, became the trader. Edward P. Woodbury, a salesman for Arthur Conger, continued to work in that capacity for Fabian. On February 27, 1885, Werner Fabian ended his term as trader, and Arthur Conger became the trader again, but only for seven months; on October 14, Arthur resigned, and the salesman Edward P. Woodbury, became the trader. Browne & Manzanares was a large commission and forwarding firm out of Las Vegas. Scarce fort sutler ephemera. A few insect holes, the largest is on the top left portion prior to “Browne”, a few smaller holes are in the vacant section on bottom of page and along top edge.
