Paua shell is a great alternative to abalone. Paua shell inlay makes a lavish addition to any guitar. For decorating the outline of a guitar shell strips should be bent and cracked to fit the desired curve. Straight strips can form slight curves while curved pieces can be made more curved or less curved to suit. As a guide a dreadnaught size guitar will need the following approximate number of curved and straight pieces: - Top or back purfling - 52 straight pieces, 12 curved pieces - Rosette - 16 curved pieces - Back strip - 21 straight pieces Paua shell is used frequently for fingerboard inlays, headstock logos and decorations. Paua has a darker and richer colour than other abalones with hues of green, blue, pink, purple and red. (Please wear a dust mask and use protective equipment as bone or shell dust can be dangerous.)
