A limited re-press of the famous Dresden recording of R. Strauss, released in December 2018 as the definitive edition. Limited to 500 sets. SACD hybrid disc. Kempe's recording of R. Strauss in Dresden, highly regarded as the definitive version since its release, is reissued from the former East German master tapes! A version with modified specifications for the old TDSA88 This orthodox Richard Strauss: Complete Orchestral Works by Dresden-born Kempe for the former EMI label is a masterpiece among masterpieces that has reigned as the definitive version since its release. For this release, Abbey Road Studios has digitized the original analog master tapes with good sound quality returned from the former East Germany at high quality (96kHz/24bit) and reissued them with the latest mastering in Japan. All works except the concertos were previously sold in Japan as SACD single layers in 2012, but for the first time, all nine works are available as SACD hybrid discs. The eight concertos are being released on SACD for the first time in the world. In addition, the clear commentary by Daisuke Hirose, a leading researcher in Richard Strauss, is a must-read permanent preservation edition. The latest 19th volume of the "DEFINITION SERIES" is a major release following the 10th volume "Jochum & Staatskapelle Dresden/Bruckner: Complete Symphonies" released exactly one year ago. The works recorded by Kempe at almost the same time as Jochum, on the same old EMI label, with the same orchestra, are the series of Richard Strauss works recorded by Kempe this time. These recordings have been highly praised since their release as the most orthodox complete orchestral works of Richard Strauss. The relationship between the Staatskapelle Dresden, which was originally strongly connected to Wagner, and Richard Strauss continued from the premiere of "Serenade for Wind Instruments" in 1882 until the year before his death, and nine of his 15 operas were premiered at this theater. In addition, the Alpine Symphony was premiered under the composer's direction (the premiere took place in Berlin) and was also dedicated to him. (1/2)Tower Records (2020/12/02)Kempe served as music director of the Staatskapelle Dresden from 1949-53, and after that he took a break from the orchestra for a while, but from 1965 onwards he returned as a guest and had more opportunities to perform. He conducted several important concerts, and recording began during a guest performance in June 1970, which developed into this complete collection of orchestral works. As a joint project between Schallplatten in East Germany and EMI in West Germany, recordings were made in a planned manner until 1976, just under four months before Kempe's death. The recordings were made by Klaus Strueben, who was the chief engineer of Schallplatten in Germany at the time, and as with Jochum's Bruckner recordings and others, his achievements should be highly evaluated as excellent recordings of St. Luke's Church, especially in this Kempe recording, which was returned from the former East Germany mentioned above. Needless to say, the performance is superb, and together with the Boehm recording on DG, this recording will continue to shine as a bible of Richard Strauss recordings, the undisputed champion of both the East and West. This reprint includes a new commentary by Daisuke Hirose. It is also very interesting to read (the commentary is 32 pages in total). In this series, the SACD layer aims for high resolution and a rich sound field with extended high frequencies and soft nuances, while the CD layer aims for a realistic tone that is pushed out with a solid sound. The CD itself has high potential, so you can enjoy it as a SACD hybrid disc that allows you to enjoy the best of both.
