Both books are hardcover with tan paper dust jackets, uniformly bound in brown cloth, with handsome black stamped lettering on gilt blocks decorating their spines. The dust jackets are in very good condition; they have shelf wear, with minimal soiling, some nicks and tearing on the edges. Spines are tight, text blocks very good, corners very good. Very minimal aging to sides of text block. Volume I, 703 pages, reviews the history of Mississippi from early settlement through the Civil War and Reconstruction to 1890. Volume II, 651 pages, reviews history from 1890 forward to 1970. The first volume is signed by the editor on the half title page, and signed by three of the contributors to volume II on the inside paste down page—William D. McCain, William Lincoln Giles, and Nellie W. Hickman. Both books have historic maps on the inside cover, black and white photographs and illustrations, and are separately and carefully indexed. This set is a highly regarded reference regarding Mississippi, featuring 43 chapters on multiple facets of state history by numerous contributors, and are considered the most comprehensive history of the State of Mississippi ever recorded. Each chapter was written by an outstanding Mississippi historian and in most cases represents a lifetime of study and research in the particular phase of history being written about. Dr. Richard Aubrey McLemore, Director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, served as editor of this massive project.
