Wovoka was a Paiute religious leader that founded the Ghost dance movement. Spiritual leader and creator the Ghost dance. Paiutes believed he could control weather as well. It is believed that Wovoka was disheartened by how events unfolded at the massacre a wounded Knee but still remained a prominent Native American leader. Sometime between 1894 and 1896, he was reported to have been a sideshow attraction at a San Francisco Midwinter Fair Carnival. I believe these photographs are from that period.
