Champagne and oysters in the saloons of Virginia City, Nevada. Hurdy-gurdy girls. Whiskey straight up. Fiery brews like the Minnie Rifle and the Chain Lightning. The time is 1864, boom time at the Washoc Range. They jam Silver City, John town and Gold Hill. The mines groan. The Comstock Lode is rich with silver. The blue grit that had clogged the gold panners' screens is precious. A branch mint is organized in Carson City and, by 1874, the Big Bonanza is on, as the Consolidated Virginia Mine strikes the largest gold and silver deposits in the history of the Comstock Lode. Toil after ton, the ore is minted into dimes, quarters, half eagles, double eagles, and the famous Carson City silver dollars. But the cost of minting runs high, and the demand for the coins out West gets low. Operations cease at the mint and the building becomes an assay office. The time is 1893, and the Carson City silver dollars lie forgotten in their bags, forgotten throughout the silver melts of the early 1900s. Now, the lost silver of the Old West, in the form of three million silver dollars, has been rediscovered in the vaults of the U. S. Treasury. Here is your chance to own one of these treasured souvenirs of the great days of'the Old West. These coins are being placed on sale under authority given to the head of the General .Services Administration, Arthur F. Sampson, under Public Law 91-6(17.
