Description: Rare Antique Victorian Mauchline Ware Needle Case Rippon Cathedral. Here on offer is a rare antique Victorian Mauchline ware needle case featuring Rippon Cathedral. The production of box ware or Mauchline ware took place from the 1820s until 1933 by W&A Smith. These boxes have always been extremely collectable and range from basic transfers to views of the place of purchase, from vases to boxes. The views ranged across the whole country and included tartan ware and later fernware was introduced. The items are almost exclusively made using sycamore wood. The products were so successful that they were sent all around the world. The factory was destroyed by a fire in 1933, production was never restarted. The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Wilfrid, known as Ripon Cathedral, and also known as Ripon Minster. Founded as a monastery by Irish monks of the in the 660s, in 672 St Wilfred refounded it as a Benedictine monastery. The church became collegiate in the tenth century, and acted as a mother church for the Diocese of York in the Middle Ages. The fourth and present church was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. In 1836 the church became the cathedral for the Diocese of Rippon. In 2014 the Diocese merged into the new Diocese of Leeds. The cathedral is notable for its gothic west front in the Early English style, as well as the Geometric east window. The seventh-century crypt of Wilfrid's church is a significant example of early Christian architecture in England. The beautifully made needle case has been decorated with an illustrated view of ‘Rippon Cathedral’. The case is formed as a cylinder with a pull off lid. The case retains crochet hooks, needles and a mechanical pencil. The case has some minor wear. The needle case is offered in good antique condition. It measures about 14.4cm by 3.9cm.
