Otto Christensen ( 1898-1982) Danish painter and newspaper Illustrator. Otto Christensen has been referred to as the master of the Danish newspaper portrait. He worked for the Danish newspapers, Dagens Nyheder, Nationaltidende from 1921 as well as the papers, Ekstra Bladet and Berlingske Tidende from 1931-1980. He became particularly known for his precise and vivid portrait drawings, and portrayed politicians musicians, and famous culture icons. Simone de Beauvoir, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Karen Blixen, Niels Bohr, Oscar Pettiford and more. When Otto Christensen made his drawings his principal purpose was to capture the distinctive character of his models. As a result he avoided definite lines but allowed his observations to guide his hand. As in his observations of others Otto C. was a journalist to the very bone, his drawings were of an incredibly varied nature, from evocative shadowy drawings to those with clear, simple lines, and from out-and-out immediate impressions to carefully prepared, self-assured portraits. Otto Christensen was stationed abroad and worked during the 1930s and 1940s in Paris and Berlin and later in Holland and the United Kingdom. In 1967, he became a member of the American institute of fine arts. He debuted at the Artists Fall Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1916 and exhibited at the Maison Danoir. Paris 1956.
