Rare Early Florence (Florenz) Kroeber Antique Mantel Clock 1870s-1880s

Description: This early antique walnut shelf or mantel clock was made by Florence (Florenz) Kroeber. The identification has been made through the patent date on the movement, the only marking (other than original seller) found on the movement or case. No label is present on the case (which has not been refinished). German immigrant Kroeber came to America with his parents about 1850 and began in the clock business as the bookkeeper for Owen & Clark clock store in New York City. Kroeber began manufacturing his own clock cases about 1870 and eventually incorporated as F Kroeber Clock Co in 1887. The patent date on this movement is September 22, 1874 on which date he filed a number of case and other patents. He contracted with various Connecticut clock manufacturers for his movements, many of which were of his own design (likely including this one given the patent date). Patent numbers filed that date include US-D007766-S and others generally in sequence. The remarkable case with rounded back is primarily walnut with some secondary wood and the clock is in working order having been tested in our store for several weeks. It does not appear to have undergone any restoration work and the faint stencil of the first seller is still seen on the back of the case: Poltz & Frank Jewellers in New Albion, Michigan. Original pendulum is included while the included key does not appear to be original to the clock. Clock measures 22 1/4 inches tall, 11 3/4 inches wide (at base), 4 3/8 deep. Pre-packing weight is 6 lb 6 oz. Condition Report: The case is in very good condition with some minor losses to the decorative element left of the Roman numeral X (see photo included to show this). Clock face is in good condition with some minor losses to paint at left winding arbor and around center scalloped edges. The case is relatively free of marks and bumps usually found in a clock of this age indicating it has been well-cared for. The reverse decoration on the glass is in good condition with some minor abrasion (but not loss) to one place at the top of the decoration.There are some quite old solder repairs to the linkage between the movement and the alarm arbor and alarm striking mechanism.
