Description: "Indian Maiden" Print by Hy Hintermeister 1930s RARE and Exceptional I am selling the frame with the print together. I will not sell the print alone because of the history of this photo. The original owner wrote on the back. The following information is about the owner of the photo, the history of the company, and female artist. Delayan Wayne Sipes (owner of the photo) died peacefully Jan. 2, 2010, after a long battle with leukemia. Del was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Jackson, Mich. to Delavan and Vivian (Fillmore) Sipes. Del was proud of his career as an educator, first teaching in the Detroit Public Schools and then at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Mich., where he pioneered the Biomedical Instrumentation Technology program and taught various electronics and science courses for 30 years. As president of the Faculty Forum, he helped bring the "mutual gains" form of negotiation to the college. Del retired in 1986 as professor emeritus, moving from his home at Wolverine Lake to Paw Paw Lake, Watervliet, Mich. He was active in township boards and committees, eventually earning the sobriquet of "Del Quixote" in this conservative southwest corner of Michigan. This photo is a print of a photo that appeared in a 1934 calendar. Calendars produced by the Gerlach Barklow Co. were once among the most mass- produced in the country. The women who graced some of them were sometimes called "Gerlach girls" and the Joliet factory in which they were produced took up a city block. Today, the calendars have mostly been relegated to history. The company closed in 1971, after 64 years in business, and the huge building in which it was located burned to the ground in 1992. The calendar prints and original artwork, however, remain popular among collectors, two of whom are Tim and Michelle Smith, of Plainfield. The couple's collection was featured in their book Joliet's Gerlach Barklow Calendar Company. (Arcadia, 2009) Much of the artwork on the calendars was not only produced by local artists - -- many of whom were women but it featured a huge number of local people, according to a news release on the Smiths' upcoming presentation. -- "If (Edward) Barklow saw a pretty girl working in his plant or a cute kid playing on the sidewalk, he would ask them to model for calendar naintins "Tim Smith said. "Lots of people in the area know someone who was on one of the calendars." One of the most famous was Lois Delander, the Joliet resident who was Miss America in 1927. She was featured on many Gerlach Barklow calendars, according to the release. When the company first started in 1907, there was no way to mass produce color prints so each had to hand-tinted by employees. While the company was amont the first to hire female artists among the most famous were Zula Kenyon and Adelaide Hiebel -- they would not let them sign their first names on the prints, the news release said. "It was thought at the time that no one would buy a calendar that had been designed by a female artist," Smith said. This photo's female artists name is on this print. Adelaide Hiebel (1885-1965) was an artist and illustrator who worked for the Gerlach Barklow Co. in Joliet, Illinois, a manufacturer of art calendars. Hiebel preferred to work in pastels, and was known for her photographic detail and portraits of women, especially "women and dogs, mothers with infants, infant portraits and small children in cute situations." Education: Art Institute of Chicago There is more information available online about this company. This photo was in the 1934 calendar along with other Native American girls. As noted on the back of this picture, the owner realized the photo was probably not Native American, but was perhaps a white woman. It is a beautiful photo regardless.
