Description: A very fine Inuit Batik from the 1970s, signed "Leah", most likely the famous Leah Qumaluk - last name is unknown, it could also be Leah Surusila - you may have a better identification method than I do to discover the artist by composition. In 1973 a Malaysian batik artist named Chinkok Tan taught a batik workshop to the artists in Nunavik. This piece is likely from the time around that workshop, originating in Puvirnituq in Northern Quebec. Many of these original pieces are now in museums, such as the Museum Cerny collection in Switzerland, and the Canadian Museum of History. This piece is exceptional and, subjectively in my opinion, superior artistic execution than the Museum pieces I have seen. This piece offers a vivid solid pink background, with vibrantly contrasting soft orange figures and stark white highlights. The artistic execution is superb for viewing, as it looks like an abstract Inuit man's face from far away, with two eyes, nose, mouth and a sparse moustache. The signature is strong and prominent. Extremely, extremely rare. Measures 33 1/4" L x 36 1/4 H x 2" with frame. This is a heavy, oversized item and will cost several hundred dollars to ship. I am including it free in the listing, but please consider this if you are making an offer. Alternatively, this can be delivered anywhere in BC or Alberta, or local pickup in Vancouver.
