Description: Very Rare Antique Japanese JIZAI KAGI Iron, Brass/Bronze Rod Hook, Fish Suspension19th C or Earlier This very rare Japanese heavy and sturdy Jizai Kati (should be still functional) hearth hook dates to the late 19th century and used to suspend cooking pots above a traditional sunken floor hearth (irori). Known as a jizai kagi, this adjustable pot hooks comprised of an iron rod encased in a bronze brass outer rod with its end a fish, hook with an attached round medallion with an inscribed embossed worn Japanese character . The bronze fish is decoded w/ primitively artful hammered scales, eyes and tail. The suspension is attached to the bronze outer rod. In addition to adding decorative appeal, the fish functions as a lever, used to raise or lower a cooking pot/kettle out from the flames below. This traditional jizai kagi is a great condition, well-preserved with all the essential components and w/ kept aged by a patina and should still be deemed functional.
