Description: Rare Picture of Ink Drawing Ateneo Puertorriqueño by Alejandro Sánchez Felipe (Madrid, Spain, 1888 - San Juan, PR, 1971) I couldn’t find this piece anywhere online but, I found 5 other ink sketches/drawings by him on one person’s account on flickr. I also found these books DIBUJOS. PLUMA Y LAPIZ. RINCONES COLONIALES, RETRATOS, COMPOSICIONES published by the Sindicato de Artes Gráficas in Habana, in 1926, (contains 33 láminas of his drawings). Album de Caracas / dibujos de Sánchez Felipe; comentarios de Santiago Key-Ayala, published in Caracas in 1954 The original work for this picture had to have been drafted after Sánchez Felipe arrived in Puerto Rico in 1933. The following year he became the director of the art school in San Juan and had his works exhibited at the Ateneo Puertorriqueño, among other locations. It could be from that time, but regardless, I think it’s from an early period of his career because, at some point, it seems he started working with oil and watercolors, which is what one does find on-line. What’s interesting about Sánchez Felipe is that he was a mentor/teacher of a few of the “50s artists” such as Augusto Marín and Rafael Tufiño; he’s the previous generation which probably laid the foundations (organizations, tallers, departments, etc) for the 50s artists’ success. Please feel free to send me any information on this work or others done by this artist. Dimensions: 16 ½ in 22 in Condition: It is in incredibly good condition. There is minor wear on the edges but no spots or stains. Main issue are the folds in the paper. The paper is very thick. Heavier than the paper used for the vintage posters from Puerto Rico. Because it’s so thick, rolling it caused the folds. I will be laying it flat, covered in acid-free tissue paper and placing heavy books on top to see if some of them can smooth out, and I will not be sending this in a tube but rather in a large envelope with the picture in between tissue paper and corrugated cardboard panels. Sorry, no returns on posters given how easy it is to damage them if mishandled.
