Description: HISTORIE DE TEXAS: "MERCI" TRAIN BY LOUIS B. AMBRECHT, GCGP-64 1968 FIRST EDITION LIMITED EDITION SOFTCOVER AMERICAN LEGION FORTY AND EIGHT FRENCH RAILROAD CAR PLM J-58113 IN 1947, AFTER WWII, A FRIENDSHIP TRAIN TRAVELLED THRU THE USA GATHERING FOODSTUFFS AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES FOR THE FRENCH PEOPLE. By the end of the 19th century, railroads made it possible to transport people and goods quickly over long distances, and this transportation revolution soon affected military operations. Armies became reliant upon railroads for supplies, and during World War I, men and supplies flowed to the trenches in railroad cars. A familiar sight to American "Doughboys" was the French "forty and eight" railroad cars, which carried them to the front. These cars received their names because they could carry 40 men or eight horses, as was clearly painted on each boxcar. - COPIED FROM THE INTERNET. IN 1949, IN APPRECIATION THE FRENCH SENT 49 OF THE BOX CARS TO THE USA EACH LOADED WITH 5 TONS OF GIFTS, 1 FOR EACH STATE AND ONE TO BE SHARED WITH THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA AND THE TERRITORY OF HAWAII. TEXAS WAS ESPECIALLY HONORED BECAUSE THAT STATE HAD A FRENCH AMBASSADOR. The French Gratitude Train (French: Train de la Reconnaissance française), commonly referred to as the Merci Train, were 49 World War I era "forty and eight" boxcars gifted to the United States by France in response to the 1947 U.S. Friendship Train. It arrived in Weehawken, New Jersey on February 2, 1949. The idea to send a "thank you" gift to the United States for the $40 million in food and other supplies sent to France and Italy in 1947 came from a French railroad worker, and World War II veteran, named Andre Picard. Donations from the Merci Train came from over six million citizens of France and Italy in the form of dolls, statues, clothes, ornamental objects, furniture, and even a Legion of Honour medal purported to have belonged to Napoleon.
