They come with copies of service record, medal rolls and 1939 census. Colour Sergeant John McCree was born in Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland on 25/5/1884. A stonemason by trade, he enlisted into the Royal Marines on 19/9/1904. He served on a variety of H.M. ship and shore bases and by the outbreak of the Great War he was a Corporal stationed at the Plymouth Division. He was posted to H.M.S. Vivid from 7/10/1915 – 31/3/1915.There were several H.M.S. Vivid’s being Vivid I – Vivid V. Vivid V was used for personnel at Milford Haven (South Wales) and it is highly probable this was the Vivid he was posted to as his next posting was to H.M.S. Sabrina (Milford Haven) which became HMS Idaho from 1/5/1915 – 29/4/1920. The base was one of the most important bases on the Welsh Coast during the First World War. With its view of the Western Approaches, and its facilities for refitting and restocking, it played a vital part in the naval defence of the Irish Sea. The headquarters was named HMS Sabrina and HMS Sabrina II up to August 1916, followed by HMS Idaho. He was promoted to Sergeant during his service on the base.Based on his lack of 1914 – 15 Star or Victory Medal, it would appear that he was purely shore based providing security and discipline. Post war he continued to serve rising to the rank of Colour Sergeant and discharged to the Royal Fleet Reserve on 19/9/1925 serving with the Royal Military Police Reserve. A position that he held until retirement in 1939.He appears on the 1939 Census in Plymouth as 'Police Sergeant H. M. Dockyard', it appears he was working in that capacity when he was mobilised with that force on 25 August 1939. He was awarded his Royal Navy Meritorious Service Medal on 28/2/1951.Please view my other collector's items for sale.
