Description: A miniature 4 1/2 inch tall clear-glass TALL SLENDER square-shaped antique ORIGINAL SNAKE OIL PATENT (quack) MEDICINE bottle. This is the RAREST of the embossed SNAKE OIL LINIMENT bottles, a small SAMPLE or TRIAL SIZE version of this bottle that held only an ounce or do of ... SNAKE OIL. Most of these we've seen over the years have been damaged (which drops the value significantly) this one is in NEAR-MINT condition. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled top, dating it all the way back to the late 1800's. Bottle Embossed: "CLARK STANLEY / SNAKE OIL / LINIMENT". Condition: This bottle is in EXCELLENT NEAR - MINT condition. It has maybe a trace of content haze or age wear, but there isn't anything specifically wrong with it. CLARK STANLEY Snake Oil Liniment bottles occur in 2 different sizes and 4 different embossings, this is the RAREST of them all. Way back in the 1880's, an easterner from Rhode Island by the name of Clark Stanley spent some time cowboy'ing way out west, in Texas. He did not want to engage in the cattle business as it was such hard work so while out there, he came across rattlesnakes and got the idea that the oil from these venomous creatures must surely be able to cure all types of human afflictions. After all, for just how wicked and evil the rattlesnake looked and for how fatal and lethal their bite is, if that venom could be refined into a concoction and administered as a medicinal cure, surely it would be potent enough to kill all the microbes that so afflicted mankind back in the day ... right? So Clark went back to Providence, Rhode Island, and started hist "Clark Stanley Snake Oil Liniment" business. He manufactured and sold this concoction in hand blown bottles with his name on them and the simple content of it embossed right into the glass of the bottle, SNAKE OIL LINIMENT. He originally mixed and advertised this concoction for people but realized he could get a greater share of the market if he widened out his target audience and started advertising it as a Man or Beast medicine, the "Best Horse Liniment in the World" he exclaimed. And there you have it, the birth of the ORIGINAL and TRUE 'SNAKE OIL' liniment. Some time ago we saw a labeled one of these bottles in a display, and the paper label shows a picture of Clark Stanley with a 5 - gallon cowboy hat on, a large handle-bar mustache, and surrounded by 2 rattlesnakes, all the right stuff to give him the title of THEE Snake Oil medicine man. This is the So here it is, the original and true SNAKE OIL LINIMENT except in this case, it is the RAREST of them all the small TRIAL or SAMPLE sized bottle with the LARGE LETTER embossing.
