This time period was called the Devonian Period, and it is pre dinosaur era!! Petoskey stones were formed when glaciers picked up stones from the bedrock and deposited them in Michigan's lower peninsula. The stones are named after Ottawa Chief Pe-to-se-ga (Rising Sun) because their pattern resembles the sun's rays. When dry, the stone looks like dull limestone. When wet or polished, a beautiful pattern of the six sided star like coral appears, six sided, giving it the scientific name of Hexogonoria.
