The original artwork was created in 1893. His In Galilee painting was sold on auction for $60,000 REUVEN RUBIN (Romanian-Israeli, 1893 - 1974) was born Rubin Zelicovici in Galati, Romania to a large and poor Romanian Jewish family. In 1912, he left for Palestine, then under Ottoman rule to study art at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design at Jerusalem. In 1913, he left to study in Paris at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. At the outbreak of World War I, he returned to Romania to the city of Falticeni, where he spent the war years. In 1921, he traveled to the United States, and in New York City, he met Alfred Stieglitz, who was instrumental in organizing their first American show at the Anderson Gallery. In 1922, Rubin returned to Europe, and in 1923, emigrated to Mandate Palestine. Rubin became one of the key figures of Israeli art, helping to form what came to be known as the Yeretz-Israel style, using a Rousseau-influenced symbolist style to depict the biblical landscapes and peoples of Israel. The offered lot was one of several studies prepared for what some consider his masterwork "The Great Galilee" executed for the Israeli Knesset in 1966. A related study titled "Galilee" was sold at Sotheby's New York, 15 December 2010, Israeli and International Art, sale N08690, lot 32. The offered lot is sold with a certificate of authenticity from the painter's daughter in law, Carmela Rubin of the Rubin Museum, Tel Aviv, Israel, the work is in the museum's registry and is to be included in the upcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's work.
