Legend: (This is a machine translation of an excerpt from the priginal description) Several of the signs here represented have, either at the top or at the bottom, an iron of spades. Flag bearers converted them into defensive weapons when they were closely in the fray. The hooks that we see at some of the poles, were used to support them. The signs depicted on the monuments are commonly adorned with crowns and loaded with small shields, 'clipei', on which there were probably portraits or other emblems relating to the particular events of each legion. We also note crenellations, n ° 1, 10, 14, 27, as a trophy of the taken cities, or beaks of galley, n° 30: they recalled ancient exploits. Among the symbols of these signs, the hand which frequently meets there, besides the traditional signification which we have pointed out, was that of the memory of the oath of fidelity which was made by raising the extended right hand; it was also a sign of concord and union, thirst between the different armies, either between the troops and their leader. She had given the sign the particular name: 'concordia.' Example n° 1 suggested that torches were placed at the top of signs in night walks. In time of mourning, public calamities, the ornaments of the signs were suppressed for a time. This is what the legions did at least after the death of Germanicus, and this certain example seems conclusive. Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy!
