Description: Roman Imperial sestertius of Claudius, 41-54 A.D., R.I.C. 112, 24.7 gms, 36 mm. The nice grade large bronze of Claudius has a very clear countermark of "NCAPR", in the field, just behind the neck of the emperor. The obverse legend shows "TI. CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG. P.M. TR. P. IMP. P.P. ", with the laureate head of Claudius to the right. The reverse shows the legend "EX. S. C. P.P. OB. CIVES SERVATOS", inside a wreath of oak leaves. Both sides a nice original dark brown color. The portrait of Claudius shows great hair and facial detail. The reverse detail is strong, and only shows minor flattening from where the countermark was struck into the obverse. This is a genuine, original coin, not a copy, replica, or reproduction. EX. Edward J. Waddell, LTD., Mid-Winter ANA Show, Atlanta, GA., 1992.
