Description: Gallienus | BI Antoninianus Reference: RIC V 660, MIR 36, 1653f Date: 266-267 CE Obverse: GALLIENVS AVG: Bust of Gallienus, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right Reverse: VENER VICTRICI; Venus, draped, standing left, holding helmet in right hand and spear and shield in left hand Mint: Antioch Size: 20.5 mm Weight: 3.76 grams HIGHLY SILVERED. A very fine imperial antoninianus from the mid-third century CE. Venus Victrix (" the Victorious") was a patroness highly sought after by ambitious Roman generals including Sulla, Pompey, and Julius Caesar. This coin advertises Gallienus following that tradition. Indeed, Gallienus's military reforms paved the way for the successes of his own ambitious generals, some of whom would go on to claim the purple: Aurelian and Probus.
