Roman Provincial | Bostra, Arabia | Trajan | AR Tridrachm | Camel & Cinnamon

Description: Trajan | AR Tridrachm Reference: SNG ANS 1153, BMC 59-61 Date: 111 CE Obverse: AYTOKP KAIC NEP TPAIANOC CEB ΓEPM ΔAK, laureate bust right, drapery on left shoulder Reverse: ΔHMAPX EΞ YΠATOC; Arabia standing left, holding branch and bundle of cinnamon sticks; to left, camel standing left Mint: Bostra, Arabia Size: 23.5 mm Weight: 9.70 grams COMMEMORATING THE ANNEXATION OF NABATAEAN KINGDOM. This heavy silver coin was struck to celebrate the addition of the new province of Arabia Petraea to the Roman Empire. The reverse features the personification of the new province holding spices with a camel at her feet, symbolizing the Empire's new control over the exotic spice trade through what is now Jordan and southern Syria. A scarce larger denomination that typically sells for well over $200 dollars. This example has unfortunately been harshly cleaned, leaving the obverse in particular with some roughness. Priced accordingly. The attribution of this type away from the traditional city of Caesarea in Cappadocia was first made by W.E. Metcalf in 1975 from the evidence of the Tell Kalak (near Amman, Jordan) hoard [ANS MN 20, p.99]. That hoard of 2350 coins contained ten coins of this type. Kindler (The Coinage of Bostra) also attributes the issue to Bostra (Pl.VI, 4). Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
