Description: ROYAL DOULTON OLD LEEDS SPRAYSFOUR ART DECODEEP DESSERT BOWLSD 3548 We have a number of pieces of Royal Doulton Old Leeds Spraysdinner and tea ware for sale ascan be seen in the group photo(see list below). This listing is for four deep octagonalbowls with wide rims which I thinkare usually referred to as berryor dessert bowls but could be for cereal too – not sure. c.1935 Can be seen in group shots displayedon my lovely Welsh Dresser- two ateach end of the lowest shelf withsome other pieces between themand on the table group shot on theright but stacked. There are 8 inthis photo but I decided 4 of themwere too ‘used’ to be of interest. Printed green backstamp withpattern name and number D3548and registration no. 597783 ***Old Leeds Sprays pattern consists of a cream colour background decorated with small and large sprays of multicoloured flowers that are simply drawn, almost naive in style which makes it much a less formal or fussy pattern than manyRoyal Doulton floral designs. The large sprays are tied with a red bow and the whole effect is verysweet or ‘cottagy’ – see photos. It is also very festive with the predominately red and greencolour way and would look great on a ‘Christmas’ table. Most pieces date to the 1930s or 1940s, one or two to a bit earlier and later - late 1940s and 1950s. According to a few online sellersthis pattern was first produced in1912 and was discontinued in 1956 but I haven’t been able toverify these dates myself. The pre 1950s all have the green rim trimsand lovely trellis design on any handles etc and the printed backstamp & numberD3548and registration no. 597783 Some of these also have an impressed date stamp (month and year) definitively dating thoseindividual pieces. The later pieces have the design numberD6203 They are same pattern but do nothave the green rim trims etc andhave a swirl design within the earthenware itself. The Complete Inventory of Items We Listed is: 1 Large serving platter D35482 rectangular servers D6203 Cake plate with tab handles D35482 lidded tureens D3548Tall lidded hot water pot D3548Small hot water pot D3548(missing the lid)Large bulbous jug D3548Breakfast cup & saucer D3548Tea cup & saucer D3548Large teapot D3548Small teapot D35484 dinner plates D35482 entree plates D35488 entree plates D62035 B&B side plates D35484 small octagonal bowls D3548 2 large open bowls D35482 large open bowls D62031 eggcup D35482 eggcups D6203Cruet set D3548Tiny milk jug or creamer D3548Butter pat dish D3548 CONDITIONLots of surface/utensil marks fromuse in the clear glaze in the wellsof the bowls but no large chips, cracks, crazing. All ‘ping’ beautifully when tapped. In the first photo the upright bowl on the plate stand at the back utensil markshave discoloured a bit which youshould be able to see in the individual photo of this bowl on the stand abit further on but it is not horrendous by any stretch but definitely there. A second one has two TINYnicks or ‘fleabites’ out of the underside of the rim edge -too small to photographbut they are there. Overall if you are in need of somemore to complete a set or have extras these are a good optionI think. The green trim is still good (coloured trims on RD is usually on topof the clear glaze and has a tendency to chip off).
