Description: Royal Empress Tree, Paulownia tomentosa, Seeds Fast Growth, Hardy, Easy to Grow, Showy Fragrant Flowers, Heat Tolerant, Shade Tree, Timber Empress Trees are noted for its profuse bloom of funnel-shaped, vanilla scented, pinkish-lavender, flowers. Flower interiors have dark purple spotting and creamy yellow striping. The 2 inch flowers appear in spring in clusters, 14 inches long before the leaves emerge, so they stand out nicely, especially against an evergreen background. Flowers are edible and are sometimes added to salads. Flowers are followed by oval, woody, dehiscent green seed capsules that ripen to brown in fall. When ripe, the seed capsules split open releasing abundant winged seeds. This native of China gives a most dramatic, coarse-textured appearance, with its huge catalpa-like heart-shaped leaves and large clusters of lavender flowers in the spring. Empress Trees grow in a variety of conditions, from Mexico all the way up into parts of Canada. They grow in almost any soil, needing little water plus they resist pests and disease. With a rapid growth rate, the Empress Tree can reach 50 feet in height with an equal spread in an open landscape. Most trees are seen 30 to 40 feet tall and wide. Unlike some fast growing trees that have short life spans, a healthy Empress Tree can live for 80 to 100 years. Traditionally, when Japanese couples have a daughter, they plant a Paulownia tree. When the daughter is ready to marry, they cut down the tree and make a dowry chest, furniture and other items out of it for wedding gifts. Paulownia Trees are believed to bring Good Fortune to the household and all who enter. Fall Color: None Sun: Full Sun Drought Tolerance: Moderate Water: Dry to medium Maintenance: Medium Site Requirements /Soil Tolerances: Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Prefers sandy humus loams with good drainage. Tolerates a wide range of soils including poor, dry ones, but dislikes unamended heavy clay soils. Tolerates light shade but is generally intolerant of shady conditions. Culture: Blooms on old wood (buds form in summer for the following spring bloom). Overwintering flower buds are ornamentally attractive but may be damaged in very cold winters, particularly when temperatures dip below 0 degrees F. Best sited in locations protected from strong winds. Paulownia may be grown as non-flowering foliage plants by administering annual hard dormant season pruning. Tree forms may be pollarded (annually prune branches back to the trunk) and shrub forms may be coppiced (annually prune stems to the ground). Such hard dormant season pruning encourage the development of much larger leaves (up to 24” long) at the expense of the spring flowers. Can also be grown in containers as a foliage plant. Uses: Beautiful specimen flowering tree for lawns and gardens. Sowing Paulownia Seeds: The seeds of Paulownia are very small. For best results, please follow the instructions in the order provided.
