Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church is a parish of the Roman Catholic Church in Maryland in the United States founded by Fr. John Carroll in 1774.[1] It falls under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Washington and its archbishop. It is named after John the Evangelist. The community has existed for well over 200 years. In 1774, the first chapel was built on land owned by Carroll's mother. Carroll worked as a missionary in Maryland and Virginia. Carroll moved to Baltimore in late 1786, and the parish was attended by Jesuit missionaries until 1813. The parish currently owns two separate church buildings, known as the "Main" or "New Church" located at 10103 Georgia Ave Silver Spring, MD 20902, and the "Historic" or "Old Church" located at 9700 Rosensteel Ave. Forest Glen, MD 20910, built in 1894. The main church, designed by Johnson & Boutin, was built in 1962. The "historic" church is currently used by St. John the Evangelist,The pastor is Rev. Joseph Calis, Our Lady Queen of Poland - St. Maximillian Kolbe Parish,[4][5] The pastor of Our Lady Queen of Poland and St. Maximillian Kolbe is Fr. Jerzy Frydrych of the Society of Christ.[6] The church/school community offers First Communion, Sunday School, grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8, and reconciliation. The current principal of the school Caitlin Keeton. Across from the school, there is also a convent that consists of nuns who are Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (I.H.M.). In Cardinal James Gibbons' speech at the laying the cornerstone of the old church at Forest Glen, he stated that St. John the Evangelist was "...the Bethlehem of the church in America..." with the understood metaphor of Baltimore being the Jerusalem. Forest Glen was once part of a land grant made in 1680 to one of Archbishop John Carroll's ancestors. Daniel Carroll, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, lived in Forest Glen.[5] Carroll's body was buried in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church Cemetery in Forest Glen.[5] The church building was originally built as a wood-framed structure in 1774.[5] It was replaced by a brick structure in 1894.[5] The Forest Estates neighborhood of Forest Glen was developed in the 1940s by Jewish real estate developers. The area was formerly rural. Forest Estates was desirable to white Jewish homeowners moving to the suburbs from the city, because some white Christian neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. used antisemitic and racist covenants in real estate to exclude Jews, as well as African-Americans and other people of color. Antisemitic covenants were not used in Forest Estates, however, some Jewish developers used anti-Black covenants to exclude African-Americans. In 1945, Forest Glen Homes purchased land formerly owned by the Getty family, who had farmed the land since 1883. The houses in Forest Estates began construction in 1947. The Forest Glen Homes real estate company included Leo Minskoff, Sadie Milestone, Philip Milestone, and several others. Other builders in Forest Glen included the Russian immigrant Nathan Brisker and the Italian immigrant Anthony Campitelli.[6] Forest Glen station was originally planned to be built above-ground, which would have required the demolition of about fifteen homes.[7] After community opposition to the above-ground station, Montgomery County approved a modified plan for an underground station.[7] The community also opposed the originally planned location for the station, on the east side of Georgia Avenue between Sherwood Road and Tilton Drive.[8] The station opened on September 22, 1990.[9][10] Forest Glen station is 160 feet (49 m) below ground, the deepest train station in the Metrorail system.[9] Free eBay listing template designed by © dewiso.com.
