Description: Carolina Lavender Farm offers Scabiosa Series this spring, Focal , Bon Bon and Butterfly Blue. Scabious is a summer flowering annual or perennial plant. It’s sometimes known as the pincushion flower for its pretty blooms. Gardeners will also recognize this flower as a popular perennial plant, blooming from July to way into the autumn season. Although a meadow flower, scabious look as happy in manicured borders, cottage gardens or gravel gardens as in a wildflower mix. They come in a wide range of colours, from white through blue to darkest burgundy. Scabious makes an excellent ‘filler’, looking good planted among grasses or mixed flowering perennials and annuals. The nectar-rich flowers are very attractive to pollinators and the seeds are good for birds. Scabious make lovely cut flowers too. ***** Focal Scoop, Focal Scoop™ Focal Scoop is almost twice the size as the Scoop™ series (flowers up to 10cm across), on longer and stronger. It has an average head size of 1.5 inches and is used as semi-focal in bouquets and arrangements, the average FOCAL SCOOP™ variety has a 3.5-inch diameter head and a thicker stem which keeps the larger head from bending. The SCOOP™ Scabiosa is now highly desired by designers of all styles. Flower vase life 12 days. ***** Scabiosa BON BON SCOOP ™ Bon Bon Scoop has more of a ball shape than the rest of the Scoop series. This amazing new series shares unique characteristics:• Very attractive full and ball shaped flowers• Long, thick, strong pedicels• Long vase life ( 3 to 4 days more than other Scabiosa varieties) *****Scabiosa Fama White*****Scabiosa Fama BlueDon't confuse Scabiosa Fama for the more tangly annual scabiosa. Fama are the long stemmed, large flowered perennial types. They flower the first year, and continue to bloom with continued harvest. It thrives in full sun in moderately fertile, medium moisture, neutral to slightly alkaline, well-drained soils. Drought tolerant. Protect from winter wet. Intolerant of high heat and humidity. Hardy to zone 5. *****Scabiosa Butterfly BlueButterfly Blue offers many benefits. It is a dwarf variety with a mounding habit and reaches 10-24 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide, making it a great flower for the middle of borders and containers. Pincushion Flower also lends whimsy and color along walkways, or in vases as a cut flower. Despite the smaller size of the plant within the species, the lavender-blue flowers reach 2-3 inches in diameter, packing a lot of color into a small space! Scabiosa Butterfly Blue does well in full sun and attracts pollinators with flowers that bloom from April to first frost. It is drought, shade, and deer tolerant and low-maintenance. Where to grow?Scabious should be grown in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade, in moist but well-drained soil. Soil pH 6.5 to 8. Scabiosa range in height from 15 to 60 cm. How to care?1. Some taller scabious plants may need staking. Deadhead plants regularly to encourage more flowers and extend the season. In autumn you can collect seed and cut plants back, or leave seedheads in place for the birds.2. Scabious suffer little from pests and diseases. In hot summers they can be affected by powdery mildew. Remedy this by mulching around plants with well-rotted organic matter, which helps seal in moisture around the roots. Scabious range in height from 15 to 60 cm, it may need some support when they are in full bloom. In ideal growing conditions, Scabiosa plants will act as short-lived hardy perennials in USDA hardiness zones 5-9, they'll bloom from spring until frost, with the heaviest blooming period occurring in May. Keep the flowers deadheaded for the best chance at repeat blooming, cut back to the ground before cold winter coming. ***Please understand that these are living plants.
