Description: These books are brand new! One has a slight 5.5" crease on the back cover that occurred during storage. I attempted to take a photo of it, but it did not come out. This set comes from a smoke free home. The books were written by Michele Sobel and illustrated by Joy Allen. They were published by Scholastic and have a copyright date of 2007. These books are part of the Scholastic "I Can Read!" series. "I Can Read!" books have introduced children to the joy of reading since 1957. Featuring award-winning authors and illustrators and a fabulous cast of beloved characters, "I Can Read!" books set the standard for beginning readers. These books are Level 2, which is "Reading With Help". Level 2 consists of high-interest stories for developing readers. The books measure 9" x 6" and have 3 chapters, so children can take a break from reading, if they wish. They have nice big print, simple sentences, repetitive words, and a straight forward story. The illustrations are drawn in thick pen, and then primary colors fill in the space. This gives a comical view of Mark's facial expressions on nearly every page. The pictures are excellent, as they provide good context clues for emerging readers. These are great books for kids to transition from beginning reading of picture books to chapter books. The books could be used for independent reading in a 1st or 2nd grade classroom, because there are more words per page and very short chapters. On the inside front cover is a black and white name plate, illustrated with the main in his turkey costume. Here children can take ownership of the book by printing their name on the provided line. The back cover of the book has a one-line description of the 5 levels of "I Can Read!" books. The first page of the book has a letter to parents with a more detailed description of the 5 levels of "I Can Read!" books. The following is a synopsis of the story: Mark wanted a big role of a Pilgrim or Indian in his class, Thanksgiving, elementary school play. He ended up getting the part of the turkey. Mark was excited, until he discovered what the turkey's real role was in the first Thanksgiving dinner! He initially thought he had an important part and was happy about it, but his older brother teased him about the role and told him it was a lame part. Now, Mark can't decide whether the part is a good or bad one. He then begins to worry about being on stage in the play and looking foolish. If Mark can't overcome his worry and find a way to get out of being the turkey, he could be a dead duck! He unsuccessfully tries to get out of the play. Kids will laugh when Mark ends up being a hit, as he runs around trying to hide, so he won't be eaten. And, they will love seeing how Mark saves the play, when a Pilgrim forgets his lines on stage, in this cute story! Children will feel happy for Mark when his teacher, parents, and classmates are so very proud of him! This story teaches the importance of working hard, standing up for yourself, and making the most out of an uncomfortable situation. Most children will be able to relate to the main character and his feelings, and the story will keep their attention. This book is a hilarious holiday feast for beginning readers! This book set would make a wonderful addition to a 1st or 2nd grade classroom library! The books would also make nice Thanksgiving gifts for young children! I am hoping to find this set a good home.
