I did write my last name, in black permanent marker, on the upper, right-hand corner of the front cover, but I never used this book, so I consider it to be new. This book has a fun and lively collection of 100 fill-in-the-blank poems, which teach and reinforce beginning readers' mastery of basic sight word vocabulary. The poems provide an opportunity for children to practice reading, writing, and spelling the words that appear most often in print. This item comes from a smoke free home. Children will develop word recognition skills, build automaticity (instant recognition), and improve reading fluency with these ready-to-go pages. Each page gives kids repeated opportunities to spell, write, and read a sight word, while completing a fun poem! Poems feature predictable, rhyming text and tie in with popular themes such as weather, seasons, all about me, and more! Some poems also have an extra activity, at the bottom of the page, where children have to draw, finish a sentence, color, etc. This book was published by Scholastic and has a copyright date of 2005. It was written by Rozanne Lanczak Williams. This resource book is a fun way to teach the Dolch Sight Word List and has 100 fill-in-the-blank practice pages that help kids really learn the top high-frequency words. On each page, there is a poem for one of the 100 sight words with a place for children to print their names at the top. Learning to read, write, and spell sight words ensures the development of reading and writing fluency in beginning readers. The reproducible poems in this book invite children to learn, practice, write, and spell 100 basic sight words in the meaningful context of fun-to-read poems. On each page kids will encounter a new sight word in the upper right corner. Then, they have the opportunity to practice writing the new sight word several times by filling in 3 or more blanks to complete the poem. This unique, interactive feature provides valuable practice and leads to mastery of basic sight word vocabulary. The first sentence, in each poem, involves a dotted sight word that children trace, before writing their own in the sentences to follow. Ruled lines encourage children to form letters correctly on guidelines. And, a "rebus" style of pictures next to words help children to be successful in their reading! Reading can be integrated across the curriculum with the poems that have social studies or science themes. The poems can also be used in Literacy Centers, added to poetry notebooks, or used to create a supply of reading material for home. Children can also be encouraged to color the pictures with a variety of materials such as colored pencils, crayons, markers, etc. This book features a table of contents with a list of sight word poems. The poems show not only the "focus sight word", but they also show the "review sight words". This book also has ways to extend learning and directions for creating poetry notebooks with children. At the beginning of this resource book, there is a section on "About Sight Words". Under this section are the following 3 subsections: "What Are Sight Words?", "How Do Children Learn Sight Words?", and "How Will Using These Poems Help My Early Readers?". Next, there is a section on "Using The Book". Under this section are the following 3 subsections: "Introducing the Poems", "Making & Using Poetry Notebooks", and "Extending the Poetry Notebooks". Following that, there is a list of "The Dolch 220 Basic Sight Words". During my years as a classroom teacher, I have witnessed the power of poetry in all its forms (chants, shared reading, songs, pocket chart activities, etc.) to inspire and motivate beginning readers. These sight word poems build children's confidence and fluency! And, fluency leads to better comprehension, which is the ultimate goal of reading! As a former educator, I purchased many Scholastic materials for my classroom. They are high-quality items that kids love! I would highly recommend them to both teachers and parents. This item is rare and very hard to find! I have only seen 1 other currently selling online! This item would make a wonderful addition to a kindergarten, 1st, or 2nd grade classroom! It would also be great to have in a household with young children! I am hoping to find it a good home.
