Demetrius was given to the Roman Republic as a hostage following the defeat of the Seleuicids in the Syrian War. After growing up in Rome, he returned to the east, dethroned his cousin (Antiochus V), and reigned over a turbulent period in Seleucid history. One of Demetrius I Soter's domestic struggles was the famous Maccabean Revolt in Judea. This rebellion of the local Jewish population against their Greek government is commemorated by the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Some surface roughness and porosity but obverse and reverse designs are clear. An affordable piece of Seleucid silver! Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
