Semi-Rare and Sculptural, Large-Growing Air Plant - Tillandsia xerographica MED

Description: A slow-growing xerophytic epiphyte, the Tillandsia xerographica is a species of bromeliad native to southern Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Epiphytes are not parasitic plants, rather, they use a host for support as they reach towards the sunlight. Epiphytes are sustained by rainfall, humidity, and decaying plant matter. The Tillandsia gets its name from the Greek work xeros meaning "dry" and graphia meaning "writing". Xerographica is a beautiful, rebel of an air plant with a distinctive and supreme look. Green-toned leaves start wide at the base and taper to a point in a sculptural form. As the plant grows, the leaf arms will extend and curl to wrap around itself in a nearly spherical fashion. The growth is slow and plants may take years before reaching their 3' maximum diameter. This particular plant may develop a red to violet shade depending on the growing conditions. This air plant makes for a stunning cup or bowl display, standalone on a table or desk, attached to grapewood, or picturesque hanging on a wall. A larger sized plant will be a showstopper on its own while the small and medium sized plants look great grouped. MEDIUM size is 4"-7" width (size just finished bloom - see photo# 4 for approximate size of plant received) *You will receive a plant similar to the one(s) pictured. Product is customizable with a wire hanger or grapewood piece for an additional fee if requested. --------------------------------------------- Foliage:Leaves are a green-grey and grow from a central rosette with curling and spiraling action. New growth appears from the center in a contrasting, spike-like form. Blooms: Inflorescence on a thick green stem that will reach 6-15" in height and is densely branched. Leaf bracts are rosy red, floral bracts are chartreuse, and petals are red to violet. Fruit: No Zoned: 10-11 Environment: Average to high humidity. It will usually tolerate indoor levels okay, but grows better with additional humidity. Grows best in 60-80 degrees F and will tolerate as low as 45 degrees for a short period of time. Light: Medium to bright direct or indirect. Although this plant can handle more light than other Tillandsia, direct, intense sunlight for long periods of time may burn the leaves. Bright, indirect light works best. Water: Submerge in water every month for up to 10 minutes. For faster growth or dry weather, soak every other week. Decrease water in winter to every 3-5 weeks. Gently shake the plant to dislodge water then place upside-down on absorbent material until the leaves are thoroughly dry. Soggy leaves or overly damp crown/base may encourage leaf drop and disease. Fertilizer: Is not required, but if a bigger and faster growth is sought, use a balanced fertilizer ever 3-6 months during the growing period. It is advisable to use a epiphyte fertilizer mix or a general-purpose fertilizer diluted to 1/4 of the directions. Notes:This plant is not considered toxic, but should not be consumed.
