Description: Notes from the lyricist A Girl Like You is a great opening track. John wanted to do a swinging/surfin’ number that would be an upbeat version of early guitar instrumentals he used to learn from The Ventures or The Pyramids - songs like Pipeline, Walk, Don’t Run or Penetration. He sent me a demo singing scat where the lyrics would fit, but he originally used “a girl like you” in the refrain and I liked it. So, I just filled in the rest of the blanks. He told me back then it was easier to do a key change than write a Mid-8 break. Voila! Hold Me. It’s interesting how life events bring inspiration. Brian Wilson wrote The Warmth of the Sun with Mike Love – one of my favorite Beach Boys songs – the same morning President Kennedy was assasinated in Dallas. The lyrics for Hold Me happened the day after the 2016 Presidential Election. The security of having someone you love hold you and not let go – going through adversity together rather than alone. Love the guitar part at the end of the song – John pegged the emotion precisely. The Little Things is a tribute to any great relationship. So often, it’s the dozens of little things we do for each other every day that make all the difference. Those “little things” are often ignored, unseen or forgotten. I think it’s important we not only notice them, we appreciate them all as well. Ready Now is also a relationship song, but it’s about that point when you are with someone and you realize it’s time to take the next step. Time to make it more serious. Time to go from friend to girlfriend (or boyfriend). Time to begin being lovers. It’s the “aha!” moment. You’re ready now! Password was an intriguing song idea. What if there was a special word or a way to open up your partner’s heart? We all have personal passwords to do our online banking or shopping. Even emails need a password. So, why not a relationship? Maybe, just maybe, you’ll be granted access. Me 2 obviously comes from the social “Me,too” movement. Survivors of sexual assault and harassment have for too long been in the shadows. “Me, too” gives victims a way to speak up and seek accountability. The movement has grown to include both women and men of all races and ages – creating a world where such actions are not acceptable and a community where the abused are not alone. This Time Around. I was thinking about the Sammy Cahn/Jimmy Van Heusen song The Second Time Around immortalized by Frank Sinatra and I thought it would be cool to give the idea a more modern twist – because actually some people have their second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth time around. Sometimes more. It’s a song about going the distance –making this one work. I think John musically got the joy and melancholy just right. Children of the Universe came from a simple thought – what if we could remember how we all lived our lives together before we were born. If we could, we’d realize that we are not at all different, but actually all the same. And just maybe, instead of creating terror, war and violence we could use our energy for peace, understanding and goodwill. We all once were stardust. Definitely the hippy song on the album. 100 Mile Mormon was an idea from a short story written by my friend and neighbor, Steve Heaps. I thought a fellow who is pious at home but a playboy a hundred miles away deserved a song. His partner in crime, a “wandering jew” is, of course, a term for a type of houseplant, among other definitions. I liked the innuendo. When the Getting’s Good was a phrase thatoccurred to me one day describing the perfect time to leave a relationship. I had it on a scrap of paper for six months beforethinking about the song lyrics. Splitting up is never a happy event – it’s anemotional journey itself – but I truly believe there’s a period of time you cando it with your heart and a time when it’s too late and you’re in it too deep. Attraction is about that magnetic force thatbrings two people together. Just like the plus and minus of a magnet are anature of physics, there certainly is something besides our imaginations thatnot only attract but sustain two people together. It’s chemistry. It’s real.Mental, physical and emotional. I both marvel and am thankful it exists. Don’t Wait ‘til I’m Dead began when I wastelling John about an older cousin of mine who died when the jack supporting acar he was working on collapsed. He was vibrant and healthy, so the suddennesscame as a real shock. We began talking about our mortality and John made thesuggestion I write some lyrics about it. It somehow segued into musicians who neverfully realized the benefits of their talent while theywere alive – Robert Johnson, Buddy Holly – the list goes on. So, I thought, let’s not let that happen to Robot Raven! – Edmond Bruneau
