Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York ....... This is a rare autographed broadside (single page playbill) from the Pre-Broadway tryout of "HOLLYWOOD PINAFORE" ("Or the Lad Who Loved a Salary") at Ford's Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland. (The production would open May 31st, 1945 at the Alvin Theatre in New York City and close after only 52 performances.) ..... A spoof of GILBERT and SULLIVAN's "H.M.S. Pinafore", the musical starred WILLIAM GAXTON and VICTOR MOORE (who earlier had starred together in Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" and "Leave It To Me!", Irving Berlin's "Louisiana Purchase" and the Pulitzer Prize winning George and Ira Gershwin musical "Of Thee I Sing") and featured SHIRLEY BOOTH, ANNAMARY DICKEY, GILBERT RUSSELL, GEORGE RASELY, MARY WICKES, RUSS BROWN and the LYN MURRAY SINGERS ..... Note: The broadside was signed in pencil by WILLIAM GAXTON, VICTOR MOORE, SHIRLEY BOOTH and MARY WICKES (shown in the first scanned image) ..... CREDITS: Book and Lyrics by W. S. GILBERT revised by GEORGE S. KAUFMAN (with the "Deepest Apologies to W.S. Gilbert"); Music by Sir ARTHUR SULLIVAN; Sets designed by JO MIELZINER; Period Costumes designed by MARY PERCY SCHENCK; Modern Costumes designed by KATHRYN KUHN; Choreographed by DOUGLAS COUDY; Ballet by ANTONY TUDOR; Directed by GEORGE S. KAUFMAN; Supervised by ARNOLD SAINT SUBBER; Produced by MAX GORDON in association with MEYER DAVIS ..... DETAILS: The single page, two-sided playbill measures 4 3/4" X 11 5/8" inches and includes full production credits, cast list and synopsis of scenes, but no cast photos or bios ..... CONDITION: With the exception of moderate creasing and minor edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
