Second installment of the JVC Digital K2HD SACD project! The precious live recordings from Gostel Radio are now available on SACD for the first time with the latest mastering! A 3-disc set featuring Shostakovich in his final years and a collection of short pieces including the transcendent "Ruslan and Ludmila." The latest SACD version has been produced using K2HD mastering from Victor's digital masters! The state of Mravinsky's maturity is reproduced on SACD! In 1989, the master tapes of Mravinsky's personal engineer, Shugal, which had been lying dormant in the tape warehouse of Leningrad Broadcasting Station, were released as a product. The sudden release of previously unreleased recordings from the 1960s to Shostakovich's 12th Symphony in 1984, which was the last recording, came as a huge shock to listeners. These recordings had only been stored digitally, but on this occasion, the master recordings have been upconverted and mastered by FLAIR Mastering works Yamazaki Kazushige using Victor's proud K2 technology, and will finally be released as the first SACD. (1/4)Tower Records (2023/11/17)Following the second release of Tchaikovsky's two symphonies and more (NCS88023) and Wagner (NCS88025), we will release a three-disc set of Shostakovich and more, which will be the last of this project to turn Gostel Radio sound sources into SACDs. As you know, Shostakovich was the most important composer for Mravinsky and continued to have a major influence on his career throughout his life, starting with the premiere of Symphony No. 5. All three symphonies included here were premiered by Mravinsky, and there are multiple recordings of No. 5 in particular as part of his regular repertoire (No. 8 is another important work. However, there is no recording of No. 9, which was premiered). All recordings except for No. 10 were made in his final years, and No. 12 in particular is considered an especially important record as it was the last recording. However, all are in stereo and the recording quality is among the best of Mravinsky's works, so its rarity has been unshakable since its first release in 1989. The tense, tight expression of No. 5, which is typical of Mravinsky, and the clear sound that seems to see through the background of the piece seem to shake the soul. The recording date was also April 4, 1984, which is almost the last. Since the Melodiya recording of No. 10 from the same period is mono, this performance is valuable as it is the only one in stereo. The performance is just as condensed as No. 5, and the speed and unity of the second movement, and the amazing ensemble ability are particularly worth listening to. The Melodiya recording of No. 12, recorded in 1961 just after the premiere, is also well known (Mravinsky refused to record any sessions after this piece). This recording has a narrow left-right spread, but it is a stereo recording, and the passion of the performance is tremendous, and the tempo is fast, so it is attractive, but in terms of sound quality, the last recording from April 30, 1984 is probably better. The introduction is more solemn than the 1961 version, and no other performance leaves a stronger impact than this one. Once the main Allegro section begins, it takes over, and the high level of perfection and technical skill, especially the fast woodwind passages, are overwhelming. As a work, it has been met with mixed reviews in the West, but what was it that Mravinsky wanted to show in the end? Although it shows a strong attitude of essentially letting the music speak for itself, there is no other performance that even makes you think about the background that is connected to the 5th Symphony. (2/4)Tower Records (17/11/2023)Apart from the Shostakovich songs, the "Meistersinger" coupling on DISC 1 was previously included as a bonus disc (the rehearsal for the "Tannhäuser" overture was included on the second Wagner album). Although this performance is a rehearsal, there is no scene where the performance is stopped in the middle, so it is probably a full dress rehearsal (it should have been included in the aforementioned Wagner, but due to recording time it was coupled separately. Please understand). The audio recording of Mravinsky's own poetry reading afterwards is valuable. And "Moscow River" and "Ruslan" on DISC 3 are also excellent. "Ruslan" is almost the same as the tremendous rush on the Melodiya disc, with its ironclad ensemble. Mravinsky, who was able to present not only technical but also such perfect music within the constraints of a live performance, and the Leningrad Philharmonic at that time were truly solitary. Or you could say it's one of the orchestra's highest achievements. This supreme performance was reviewed again from the master and reissued with the latest technology. Despite the handicap of early spec digital recording, we have completed it as a recording that will be preserved for the future without compromising the musical aspect. Please enjoy the sound and tone. Listeners around the world wish they could hear Mravinsky's performance with better sound and better balance. It is a well-known fact that there are very few sound sources that meet these conditions, but many of the previous sound sources, including Melodiya, had problems with balance, and it cannot be said that they fully conveyed the original appearance. Although these sound sources have not been completely eliminated, this time, in the latest mastering, we have paid close attention to reprinting the master while preserving the musical elements more than ever before. We would like to take this opportunity to leave behind the best sound source that comes as close as possible to the essence of Mravinsky's past by improving the sound quality. The master provided by Gostel Radio, owned by Victor, was originally only available digitally. Therefore, for this SACD, Victor's "K2" technology (K2HD), which was used for the series of Fedoseyev reprints in 2022, will be used to perform the latest mastering and reprint it as a SACD hybrid disc. Victor has already released a remastered version as a commercially available version, but for this latest reprint, the original master was re-mastered after being re-imported. Using "K2" technology, we aim to pursue the original sound by up-converting the CD master to 192kHz/24bit after several comparisons. The difference can be felt not only in the SACD layer but also in the CD layer. In addition, the commentary book includes commentary on each disc and track list from the time of its initial release, various photos (black and white), and a new preface commentary by Naoya Hirabayashi, who saw Mravinsky's live performance during his visit to Japan. It is also highly valuable as a reference material. In addition, the jacket uses the design from the initial release, with some text changed.(3/4)Tower Records (2023/11/17)"K2HD mastering in pursuit of the original sound""K2" technology (K2HD) analyzes lost musical information, making it possible to restore the tone of each instrument, which has different harmonic components, and even reproduce the musical expression of the performer. In mastering this work, in the presence of the director and recording engineer at the time, we used "K2" technology to pursue the original sound by upconverting the CD master to 192kHz/24bit. I think you will be able to feel the difference not only in the SACD layer but also in the CD layer. ■What is "K2"It is a high-quality information processing technology for digitizing sound sources, jointly developed by JVC and Victor Studio. ■The philosophy of "K2"Based on these two guidelines, "restore/restore to the original state" and "do not alter/retain the original", the philosophy of "K2" is to "reproduce the artist's particular sound as it is in the original".■Restoration of 22.05kHz and above (restoration of lost information)Sound is made up of many harmonics, which are lost during digitization. "K2" analyzes the lost musical information on the time axis and reproduces the playback frequencies above 22.05kHz that were lost in the digital master, restoring the harmonic tones of each instrument and the performer's expression, reproducing musical expression equivalent to that of the original master.■Unique mastering for this workFor this work, the CD master was upconverted to 192kHz/24bit using K2HD in pursuit of the original sound. This is a technology that is only possible with "K2", which processes on the time axis rather than the frequency domain.(4/4)Tower Records (2023/11/17) (Contents)Number of discs | 3 Edition | Remaster [Tracklist]1.
