Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) SIDMOUTH. This is one of the oldest watering-places of South Devon, and it is generally considered the mildest: its dry warm climate is fully equal if not superior to that of the Riviera and southern France. The Duke of Kent died here in 1820, and here was spent much of the infancy of Queen Victoria. On all sides but the south, Sidmouth is sheltered by hills five hundred feet in height, its beautiful bay being flanked by High Peak on the west and Salcombe Hill on the east, the latter being in the background of our view, which also embraces the Esplanade. On the beach, agate, carnelian, jasper, and chalcedony are to be found; the bathing is good; the sea limpid; the rock-pools and anemones of exquisite beauty. The old Roman fortification of Sidbury Castle is near.
