Description: “MELK ON THE DANUBE” SIGNED ORIGINAL COLOR AQUATINT ETCHING BY AUSTRIAN ARTIST AND PRINTMAKER LUIGI KASIMIR (1881-1962) This is an original life time Luigi Kasimir etching, pencil signed by the artist below the image center within the plate mark: Luigi Kasimir. The Luigi Kasimir catalogue number is: 98. The exact image size measures 9 1/2 x 9 1/16 inches (24 X 23 cm). The etching is printed on a cream color wove paper, the sheet with full margins measures 14 x 11 inches. The etching comes unframed. CONDITION: The etching is in very fine condition, a fine crisp impression with no evidence of any damage to the image. The verso has paper hinge tape remnants along the top and bottom edges. Luigi Kasimir was born in 1881 in Pettau, a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under William Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the colored etching. Kasimir was among the early practitioners of the multi-plate color etching. Before this, prints were usually hand-colored after being printed with the color being applied in a casual, haphazard manner. Kasimir would first create a sketch, usually in pastel, and then transferred the design on as many as four to six plates, applying the color ink on to the plates by hand and printing one after the other. One of his favorite genres was the landscape. He demonstrated a predisposition for monuments, street scenes, and tourist landmarks. He depicted places from all over Europe, mainly Italy, Austria, and Germany. He also travelled to the United States to do a series of etchings of famous sights ranging from urban landmarks such as New York skyscrapers to natural wonders like California’s Yosemite Valley.
