About this Book:ROOM AND TIME ENOUGH The Land of Mary Austin ... you may reach my country and find or not find ... much that is set down here. . . . The earth is no wanton to give up all her best to every comer, but keeps a sweet, separate intimacy for each. The above was written by a lover of the earth, Mary Austin. She first achieved recognition as a writer for her interpretation of the California desert. A midwesterner by birth, she moved to California’s Owens Valley before the turn of the century; in 1903 her Land of Little Rain was published and widely admired. She wrote about the land wherever she lived: Owens Valley, Monterey Peninsula, New Mexico. Her writing took every literary form, from novel to nature essay. But it reached its most memorable levels of expression when she wrote of the earth, illuminating not only the landscape but the spirit of the West. She was attentive to an inner reality more compelling than the world around her. In her nature essays, the land comes alive with Presences and Powers unsensed or ignored by the casual observer. Seen through the lens of her highly personalized and imagistic style, it becomes possible to perceive the quality of a country awesome in its immensity, yet intimate in its hold on the affections. The collaboration between photographer Morley Baer and writer Augusta Fink has produced a sensitive accompaniment to the literary landscapes of Mary Austin, one that will bring “such news of the land, of its trails and what is astir in them, as one lover of it can give to another.” The photographs in this volume are the response of a man challenged by Mary Austin’s writing to use his camera as she did her pen. Morley Baer’s photographs are as crisp and vivid as the incandescent writing he admires. These images, and the accompanying Austin quotations, bring to life the earth that was her inspiration: a land of limitless space and sky, of great granite mountains and gleaming desert sand, of forsaken mesas and seabreasting hills.
