Description: SIGNED by Mrs. Crapo! 12mo. First Edition Maroon cloth with embossed designs to covers and gilt lettering to spine. The voyage of Captain Thomas Crapo and his wife in a dory boat from New Bedford, Massachusetts, to England. Crapo and his wife achieved a great deal of fame because of a seven-week transatlanic crossing in a small dory. Crapo died several years later when he tried to repeat the effort by sailing from New Bedford to Cuba in a 9-foot dinghy. After his death at the turn of the century, his wife re-issued his autobiography. Though not noted on the title page, the re-issue is identified by Mrs. Crapo's mention of her late husband's demise. Having been left penniless at his death, she writes: "I am now solely depending on the result[ing sales] of the book 'Strange but True.'" Near Fine.
