Description: Meteorite Specimen from 1947 Sikhote Alin meteorite fall in Eastern Siberia, the largest recorded fall with 23 metric tons of meteorite material leaving over 120 impact holes. This specimen displays regmaglypts (thumbprint-like depressions) ancd has ragged, twisted and distorted surfaces. This occurred because the meteorite broke up at a rather low altitude, therefore not subjecting itself to the intense ablation that would have smoothed its surface. Major fractures were also formed when it impacted the frozen ground. This is a group II-B iron meteorite classed as a very course octahedrite. The bulk of the material is iron, but it averages 5.9% nickel, 0.42% cobalt, 0.46% phosphorus, 0.28% sulphur, with traces of galenium, germanium and iridium. Weight 67.2 grams, length 2.2 inches.
