Our silkies are like our children and are treated as such. Our silkies get outside time daily and have roomy pens inside the coop. We feed Tucker Milling showbird with supplements to ensure our adult birds have no vitamin deficiencies that may affect the chicks. Please realize even the best silkies can still produce chicks with 4 or 6 toes and straight combs, it happens. Perfect birds dont exist, and unexpected colors and patterns can occasionally pop up. I can't guarantee the colors, its hens choice. Genetics and mother nature dont follow the rules. We check fertility often. However, it's still possible that an egg may not develop. Also, most show silkies have been bred for a very long time to have vaulted skulls. You may notice a bump on top of the head at hatch. These were thought to produce bigger crests for showing. This is not a disqualification or abnormality, but it makes Silkies even more fragile. A fall or peck on the head can cause brain damage. We do not recommend silkies be placed in mixed flocks, and they should only be kept with birds of comparable size. HANDLE WITH CARE! -------------------------------------- SHIPPING INFORMATION - Laying can be sporadic, so it can take up to 7 days to ship.I only ship Mon.-Wed. to avoid eggs sitting or being lost over the weekend. Please understand that shipping eggs through the mail is pretty traumatic for any potential embryo. Unfortunately, the postal service is rushed, and many don't care what's inside the package. This means the eggs are likely going to get thrown around even if packets are smothered in 'FRAGILE' labels. All too often, eggs break, and the air cells can be destroyed no matter how well they are packaged. Unfortunately, we cant replace the eggs when this happens. However, if they are broken when received, take pictures, and you can file for insurance reimbursement through USPS at https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htm I'll be glad to help. These are eggs, and as such, they are fragile. I will ship the very best I can to ensure they arrive safely. They are individually wrapped with bubble wrap and nestled in an egg carton, which is surrounded by air packs. The area around the carton is further cushioned. However, what happens when they leave my hands is out of my control. A 50% hatch rate is considered good for shipped eggs, but Ive listed some strategies to improve the odds. These are the things that have helped me and other breeders. They are not written in stone..... -------------------------------------------- Rustic Roost Silkies- Pointers For A Good Hatch It's really important to let hatching eggs that come through the post rest for at least 24 hours. Open the packets, make sure all the eggs are sitting tip down, and then leave them. This gives the eggs a chance to settle and for the air-sac to reattach itself inside the egg. Even if it doesn't completely attach, at least it can float back into the right place, and any bubbles can dissipate. Do not wash them. Use a forced air incubator if possible. Your incubator should already be running with settings stable. Set eggs in an incubator that has stable temp. and humidity with pointy end down or laying down with pointy end facing toward the middle of the incubator. You can candle when received, but I recommend 7 days. Blood vessels in chicken eggs are normally observable within 7 to 10 days of an egg's incubation. Rotating eggs is important, but in shipped eggs, turning eggs too quickly can cause more damage than good. For the first three or four days, do not rotate the eggs. This allows further stabilization of the egg sack and developing embryo. After this period, turning on the turner or manually flipping the eggs twice or three times a day is advised. Keep temperature in the incubator 99.5F to 100F . Keep humidity 50-55% for the first 18 days, and bump up to 70% the last 3 days (lockdown) -------------------------------------- Rustic Roost Silkies- Detailed Egg Hatching Instructions Location of incubator- Place your incubator in a room that has a stable temperature, away from windows and drafts, and out of direct sunlight so that you do not have extreme temperature changes inside the incubator influenced by outside temperatures. Temperature inside the incubator- Always purchase another thermometer so you can gauge whether or not your incubator thermometers are working correctly. Incubator temperature should be kept at 99.5 degrees F. It takes 21 days for standard breeds and 20 days for bantams to hatch eggs, so mark your calendar accordingly. Check your incubator temperature and humidity several times throughout the day, but avoid opening the incubator as much as possible. Make sure your incubator has proper ventilation, and if it does not have an egg turner, you will need to turn the eggs manually once every day. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly and never trust the thermometer that comes with an incubator. Humidity- It is very important to maintain the proper temperature and humidity inside the incubator. Too much humidity can cause "mushy chicks'' and not enough humidity can cause the shells to dry out. Maintaining the proper temp and humidity will give you a better shot at hatching healthy baby chicks. Humidity affects the chicks weight gain and loss by affecting the amount of moisture that is lost during incubation. Improper humidity can result in chick deformities and death. Desirable humidity during the first 18 days of incubation is around 50% to 55%. Be mindful of water levels, use distilled room temperature water when filling your incubator. Day 18-21 (lockdown)bump it up to 60-70%. Egg Turning- Recommended to wait until day four to day 7 with shipped eggs. It is best to purchase a quality incubator with an automatic egg turner for best results. Automatic egg turners turn the eggs inside the incubator every four hours to eliminate manual handling/opening and improve hatch rate. Candling- I recommend candling first at 10 days. Blood vessels in chicken eggs are normally observable within 7 to 10 days of an egg's incubation. If the inside of the egg is clear, that is, free from visible structures or dark areas - the egg did not develop. Remove this egg from the incubator. If a ring of red is visible within the egg, there was an embryo at some point, but it has died. Remove this egg from the incubator. If you can see blood vessels within the egg, there is a live embryo inside. By 18 days of incubation, the embryo takes up most of the egg and appears as a dark area within the egg. You can sometimes see movement inside the egg. If you notice broken or leaking eggs, remove them from the incubator as they are not likely to be viable and may contaminate the incubator. Candle eggs again at lockdown. Lockdown- For days 18-21, increase humidity to 65-70%. Remove the egg turner or stop manually turning. Place a soft piece of cabinet liner in place of the egg turner. This helps prevent splayed leg. Open the air valve all the way up and do not disturb the eggs. They can hatch anywhere from 19 to 21 days. Hatching instructions will be sent with your order. Please let me know if you have questions. Thanks! *********************************************** FOLLOW US ON FB FOR MORE INFO, PHOTOS AND REELS.
