As Massachusetts delegate to the Second Continental Congress in 1775, John Adams nominated Washington Commander-in-Chief of what became the United States Army. Indeed, Adams came to embody the Revolutionary War, immersing himself in the cause for the thirteen colonies' independence from the British crown. Volume One of John Adams begins with the future president's birth in 1735 and ends in 1784 when he was Commissioner to France. The author, Page Smith, exposes the freedom fighter's many idiosyncrasies as well as his virtues. John Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts. Though young John was content to till soil, his parents recognized the value of education and provided him with advanced schooling, culminating at Harvard. After several dreary years as a schoolteacher in Worcester, Adams became a lawyer and set up his practice in Braintree… Volume 2: As the United States of America was born, so was partisan politics. Its first victim: John Adams. Volume Two of Page Smith's comprehensive biography of our nation's second President picks up in 1784, where Volume One left off, and concludes with Adams' death in 1826. The book covers John Adams' final frustrating years as Ambassador to London, his tumultuous career as Vice President and President, and his twilight years as a farmer and master commentator on the country's events. The book also pays tribute to his first lady, Abigail Smith Adams, as a model partner and advisor to the often irascible statesman. Much of the story is set against the backdrop of the simmering French Revolution, which threatened to divide the United States and possibly immerse it in war once again. The conservative Federalists - spearheaded by Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton - swore their support to Great Britain despite past bloodshed at British hands. The liberal Republicans - supporters of idealistic presidential contender Thomas Jefferson - sided with the French and equated Federalism with hypocrisy. While the two parties battled, John Adams fought his own lonely battle - for peace. Adams, the diplomat, disdained further war involvement and saw partisan politics as a threat to American unity. In one of his frequent letters to Abigail, he warned that such division would produce "slanders and libels first, mobs and seditions next, and civil war with all her hissing snakes, burning torches, and haggard horrors at last.” This is the Easton Library of the Presidents reprint edition of original work by Page Smith, which originally appeared in 1962.
