The kit consists of crystals of quartz and calcite that can be differentiated by hardness (quartz has a hardness of 7, calcite has a hardness of 3), cleavage (quartz has conchoidal fracture, calcite has 3 perfect cleavage planes), and reaction with dilute acid (quartz will not react with vinegar whereas calcite will produce small bubbles of CO2 as it slowly dissolves). Have fun exploring the physical and chemical properties of quartz and calcite, but make sure to take care if breaking samples.
