Description: The original Dr. Solar was created in 1962 by writer Paul S. Newman and artist Bob Fujitani. It was the first original character of fledgling comic publisher Gold Key, which was formed after Western Publishing ended it's business arrangement with Dell Comics. The striking cover artwork of the Gold Key books made them stand out on the newsstand shelves and the books were an immediate success. The popularity of the original series peaked in 1965, and after a general decline in the comic book industry, the title was discontinued in 1969 after issue #27. Solar next appeared in 1991 when another fledgling publisher, Valiant Comics, was allowed to license characters from the Gold Key Library. They launched a new line of Superhero titles featuring Gold Key's Solar and Magnus The Robot Fighter. Solar, like it's Silver Age predecessor, featured unique and stunning cover art, this time by Barry Windsor Smith. The print run of the first year's issues were limited to 60,000 copies. But as their popularity increased, the distribution numbers peaked at 360,000 copies with the release of issue #23. The series was eventually cancelled due to declining sales after the publication of issue #60 in 1996. Included in this offering is a CGC Certified 9.0 VF/NM copy of issue #5.
